What the court ruled.

The California Supreme Court ruling on Prop 8 this week did NOT address the morality or legality of gay marriage: it ruled only on the legality of the issue itself on the ballot, which is why the marriages in existence remain. “In a 6-1 ruling, the court said the November ballot measure that restored a ban on same-sex marriage was a limited constitutional amendment, not a wholesale revision that would have required a two-thirds vote of the Legislature to be placed before voters. ”
